The Ashford Lions Club was chartered here in Ashford, Alabama in 1937, and it is one of the oldest active clubs in Alabama. In all that time, the club has been a very vital and vibrant part of the community. We are best-known for our bi-annual Brunswick Stew cooking which has been the club’s biggest fundraiser for well over 60 years. The mission of our club as it is for Lions Alabama, Lions USA, and Lions International is to be the “Knights of the Blind in the crusade against darkness”. The main focus of Lions is to aid those who have been adversely affected by vision impairment or vision loss. However, Lions do much more than that. On the local level, we support local charitable causes that aid people from all walks of life in our local area. For example, our club has been a proud sponsor of organizations such as The Exchange Center for Child Abuse Prevention, The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, The Wiregrass Food Bank, and many others. We have also assisted those in need in our local community with the purchase of glasses, vision screenings, and various forms of treatments. We have provided scholarships for well-deserving young people, and have sponsored local teenagers to participate in the Alabama Lions High School Leadership Forum.
I could go on and on writing about all of the wonderful things that the Lions Club does, but I would encourage everyone to see for themselves what we do. Please, feel free to attend our meetings and remember to bring your appetite.
